Thor X1 vs Bitaxe Gamma: which one?

The Thor X1 and its BM1373 chip beat the Bitaxe Gamma on almost everything: hashrate, efficiency, size. The Gamma keeps one advantage that matters to many miners: its software is open. Here is the comparison, with my wall-meter measurements.

Figures measured at the wall rated figures

Electricity at €0.20 per kWh, around the clock. Solo odds with the network as of 17 October 2026. “Interface”: figures shown by the machine, without power supply losses.

The difference in short

  • Chip: BM1373 in the Thor X1, BM1370 in the Gamma.
  • Software: ThorOS, Hammer’s in-house system whose code is not published, versus AxeOS, open source.
  • Network: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi on both, no Ethernet.

Efficiency and electricity

In normal mode the Thor X1 does 2.1 TH/s for 22 W, that is 10.6 J/TH measured at the wall: the best efficiency I have measured on a desk miner. The Gamma is around 15 J/TH. In overclock the Thor reaches 3.22 TH/s but draws 46 W: 50% more hashrate for more than twice the power. Over a year at €0.20 per kWh: about €39 for the Thor in normal mode, €32 for the Gamma.

Price

For the price of a Thor X1, €215 to €220, you nearly get two Bitaxe Gammas. Two Gammas means 2.4 TH/s for 36 W. The Thor X1 does 3.2 TH/s in overclock, or 2.1 TH/s for just 22 W: it wins on hashrate, efficiency, size and price per TH/s.

What the Gamma keeps

Open software anyone can read and fix. Fine tuning. A huge community. And redundancy, since two machines do not fail at the same time. On my unit, the Thor’s chip also turned capricious as soon as I left the stock settings.

Which one should you choose?

  • The Thor X1 if you want the best efficiency in the smallest box, set up once and left alone. Keep it in normal mode.
  • The Bitaxe Gamma if you want to read the software, tune your machine yourself, or spread the risk across several small machines.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Thor X1 more efficient than a Bitaxe Gamma?

Yes: in normal mode I measured it at 10.6 J/TH at the wall (2.1 TH/s for 22 W), against about 15 J/TH for a Gamma. In overclock it goes back up to 14.2 J/TH.

Is the Thor X1 open source?

No. It runs ThorOS, Hammer’s system, whose code is not published. The Bitaxe runs AxeOS, which is open source.
